With the massive demand for the new Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride, Disney has made some more modifications to the Hollywood Studios Hours in January, February and March 2020, and now you’ll need to get up even earlier.
Updated 1/16/19 – Disney has announced extended opening hours for Disney’s Hollywood Studios for January, including park opening as early as 7 am, as well as Extra Magic Hours until 10 pm.
Rise of the Resistance will NOT participate in Evening Extra Magic Hours however (more on this below).
Specifically for January, Disney has extended the Hollywood Studios hours by one hour in the morning on many days. These dates previously had an 8 am opening time, but due to continued high demand for Rise of the Resistance, they have been moved to 7 am.

For January, Disney has recently updated their Hollywood Studios schedule and are now opening the park earlier than previously listed. They recently moved even more days from an 8 am opening to 7 am and there are no days before January 27 with an 8 am opening.
With no slowdown in sight for Rise of the Resistance crowds, we aren’t surprised by the recent move to open more days in January at 7 am. If the crowds continue over the next week+, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them change the rest of the days to 7 am in January also.
Right now for February, all the park openings are listed at 9 am except the first. We do not expect that to hold true and as the month of January goes on, you will see the park opening time become earlier in February too.
The March opening hours for Hollywood Studios are all listed at 9:00 right now, but we expect that to be bumped up to at least 8:00 am once we get closer so keep that in mind if you will be visiting during that time.
You’ll also notice all the Evening Extra Magic Hours that have been put into the schedule. These have replaced the Morning ones since the park is already opening earlier than normal.
- NOTE: It’s important to understand Disney has said Rise of the Resistance will not be part of Extra Magic Hours in Hollywood Studios. The rest of the attractions in the park will be open, but apparently not Rise of the Resistance. We think however that if a buffer is needed and boarding groups have not all yet boarded by the time EMH starts, they will probably finish loading during EMH.
Why are these changes happening? Rise of the Resistance has been so incredibly popular, and since the opening on December 5, the park has already been opening much earlier than the originally advertised operating hours for the park.
Further complicating matters is the fact that you need to get a boarding group from the virtual queue to ride Rise of the Resistance, and the majority of the time they have been filling up for the day shortly after Hollywood Studios opens.
Because of that, there have been many angry guests who were showing up early, yet realizing they couldn’t even ride Rise of the Resistance the entire day.
How is it Working So Far?
This early morning change was supposed to mean that Disney was going to actually open Hollywood Studios at the listed time of 7 am. In the beginning, this was not the case, and instead, they started letting guests in the turnstiles before 6:30 am. Because of that Rise of the Resistance was already sold out of boarding passes for the day by 7:15 am.
Instead of making it less confusing for guests, and giving everyone on an even playing field to ride the new attraction, it seems like this initial decision actually made it worse and made Rise of the Resistance sell out all boarding passes even earlier than before.
Things have changed since then however, and now Disney has been letting people into Hollywood Studios shortly before the listed opening time, but holding them back at the end of Hollywood Blvd.
More importantly, they are not allowing guests to enter the virtual queue before the listed park opening time, but they will have to wait and everyone in the park will have the same opportunity to enter.
What do those changes mean for you? With all the changes to the park opening procedures, everything is still up in the air at the moment. At a minimum, if Hollywood Studios is scheduled to open at 7 am, we still highly recommend you get to the park between 6:00 am – 6:30 am to make the most out of your day.
In our opinion, since everyone now knows the official park opening is 7 am, this will drive even more guests to the park before that time, leading to even more crowds in Hollywood Studios, which has been the case so far.
Right now there aren’t any SUPER early mornings on the schedule (6 am), but on the days that Hollywood Studios crowds were at the highest and opening at 6 am, we were recommending you getting there 1 hour earlier by 5 am.
If demand for Rise of the Resistance continues into the Spring, you could see some really early mornings during Spring Break. If not, then they might show up again in July.
I know getting up early on vacation sucks, but if you get to Hollywood Studios by 6 am or before, you will definitely get on Rise of the Resistance, and in the meantime, ride the rest of the Hollywood Studios attractions by 12 pm at the latest. This will ultimately save you a ton of time and you’ll have fewer crowds to deal with.
No word yet on how long these changes will stay in effect. Disney is probably just testing it out right now to see what happens, and it’s possible they will extend these hours for Hollywood Studios for more dates into January if successful.
