Tomorrowland Speedway Now Closed for Refurbishment (Reopening Date Listed)

We found out a couple months back the the Tomorrowland Speedway attraction will be closing for refurbishment on January 2, 2019 to make way for the new TRON Roller Coaster construction.  That day is now here and the Tomorrowland Speedway is officially closed.

However we also know that the Tomorrowland Speedway will be reopening on May 18, 2019, which is roughly 4 months to get it all back up and running.

The reason for such a lengthy refurbishment is that the TRON coaster building will be hanging over part of the Tomorrowland Speedway track so time is needed to do the needed construction work.

Six months is a lot of time but necessary for a project this big.  The Walt Disney World Railroad is also closed at this time and that one is going to be a bit longer as Disney hasn’t yet said when they expect it back up and running.  To be safe don’t expect to see it open again until late 2019, if then.

You can see the full schedule of Disney World Refurbishments and Ride Closures here to see what else is being worked on.

Stay tuned for more information about both the TRON roller coaster and Tomorrowland Speedway.

Your Thoughts:

I want to know what you think about the Tomorrowland Speedway closing for refurbishment…

  • Is this a big change to your plans?
  • Should they keep the Speedway or replace it?

Just went to Disney World the last week of December 2018. While riding around on the people mover, we noticed a LOT of pollution and exhaust hovering over the Speedway. While nearly every kid probably loves the idea of that loud engine running behind them, perhaps due the environmental impact and guests allergies, it might be time to re-imagineer the Speedway to toque-y electric, or something that pollutes less but offers the thrill the kids would love.

PS - just discovered and like your site.

Hi John! Thank you so much for the compliment and the message. Yes I agree with you that there is a LOT of pollution over the speedway and a terrible exhaust smell all the time. It would be nice for them to overhaul the ride, maybe as Wreck It Ralph or something more futuristic. TRON would have been nice too but won't happen now with the TRON coaster next door. I think either way they definitely need to upgrade the cars, as they barely work every time I go on..
