Many people were/still are sad about losing The Great Movie Ride in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, no matter how cool Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway turns out to be. To help soften the blow, some new images leaked out onto the internet yesterday on the site: backdoordisney.com of the construction progress inside the Chinese theater, showing the state of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway and the demolition of The Great Movie Ride.
Why is that a consolation? It seems that Disney is keeping around some of the old theming elements from the queue of The Great Movie Ride and using them in Mickey and Minnie’s Runway Railway!
Let’s have a look…
Right away you can see the famous columns and tapestries still hung from the queue of the Great Movie Ride. Even parts of the carpet are still down.
Now it’s important to note that from the website it says: “current state” but looking further into the details of the photos it looks like they were actually taken in May/June 2018. I don’t think all of the existing theming that was here for The Great Movie Ride is staying, but the fact that it closed in August and a lot of it is still around is a good sign towards that.
I think that’s a nice way for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway to pay homage to its predecessor, after all Disney has already said the outside of the Chinese Theater is not getting any major changes.
All of the movie props and cases that once filled this room are now gone, but the walls remain…
Further down we start to see above angle views of the construction in the actual show-scene rooms:
Looks like lots of boxes holding mechanical equipment as well as props for the new attraction:
This is the old room where guests would queue up to see all the old movies as they were waiting to load onto the ride vehicles. This will once again be the spot where guests go ride before loading into their Mickey and Minnie’s Runway Railway cars…
No trace of the old ride system is left with everything having been ripped out…

Expect Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway to open in Summer 2019, hopefully in June which would be in time for most of the Summer rush. Stay tuned for more info as it comes out…
