D23 Expo Japan just wrapped up this weekend and we got some great new info on some of Walt Disney World’s most anticipating attractions, including Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. This will be the first attraction in any Disney park to feature Mickey Mouse and it looks like it shaping up to be a game-changer! We found out that Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is opening in 2019 and got a look at the Ride Vehicle too!
Themed to the new Mickey Mouse shorts, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway takes guests on a wacky journey inside Mickey’s world, and uses new technology Disney is calling 2 1/2-D to create this multi-dimension experience. Of course most attractions that are trying to create a similar effect rely on 3-D goggles to drive the technology, but Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway doesn’t use any goggles at all. It’s completely new technology.
Guests at D23 Expo Japan were given a look at the ride vehicles too. Guests hop inside one of 4 separate cars in the train, which have 2 rows of 2 for a total of four passengers. Goofy is the one conducting this out of control train, bringing guests on a wild and crazy journey though a Mickey Mouse cartoon. If you look at the concept art you can see that Goofy is driving the train, and guests “step in” through the screen and aboard the train with Goofy. It’s rumored that the 4 cars will be able to separate from each other, and the train, and then be able to reunite later on in the attraction.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway begins with guests watching the premiere of a new Mickey and Minnie cartoon short as they are getting ready for a picnic. Once the action starts, they drive alongside Goofy and his out of control train.
A brand new theme song will be featured in Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, and the team creating this attraction is working alongside the creators of the Mickey Shorts cartoons to keep everything as authentic as possible. It’s about time Mickey gets his own ride, and you’ll be able to experience it for yourself in 2019!
This means it will be a big year for Hollywood Studios as this attraction will be opening up at the same time as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge does, even though that will be closer to the end of the year, whereas we’re looking at a May opening most likely for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
UPDATE May 2019: Disney has announced that Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway won’t be opening until Spring 2020.
