This is the third year in a row that Thailand is back at Food and Wine, and we’re really looking forward to it because it was one of our absolute favorite menus last year!
The Marinated Chicken with Peanut Sauce and Red Hot Spicy Thai Curry Beef are back as well as a new version of the Shrimp Noodle Salad and we can’t wait to try them so let’s get into our Thailand Review for the 2019 Epcot Food and Wine Festival!
It’s hard to miss the Thailand marketplace, it stands right out with all its bright colors and pointed roof. It’s located on the World Showcase loop right near Mexico:
The Marinated Chicken with Peanut Sauce is back this year, (not happy about) and so is the Red Hot Spicy Thai Curry Beef (which we are happy about) but there is a big change that we are skeptical about to say the least.
The awesome Shrimp and Scallop Cake is replaced this year with just Shrimp and Cold Noodle Salad. If the cold noodle salad is like previous years it still is going to be a good dish, but I’m worried it won’t reach the same level.
The drinks menu remains weak with only two options. They need to step up in the drink department in Thailand.
- Marinated Chicken with Peanut Sauce and Stir-fried Vegetables (KA) ($5.00)
- Shrimp and Cold Noodle Salad ($5.25)
- Red Hot Spicy Thai Curry Beef with Steamed Rice ($5.50)
- Singha Lager ($4.50)
- Maison Willm Réserve Gewürztraminer, Alsace ($6.00)
Marinated Chicken with Peanut Sauce and Stir-fried Vegetables ($5.00):
The Chicken with Peanut Sauce was ok. I’m usually a fan of a Thai peanut sauce, but this wasn’t as good as usual. The portion size was decent, though in year’s past was much more abundant.
The chicken was cooked fine, but the peanut sauce itself was a bit too salty and almost had a fishy taste to it which was probably because of the oil used to cook it. It also turned out being a bit watery too. We just weren’t feeling this dish that much and it was a disappointment since we loved it last year.
Shrimp and Cold Noodle Salad ($5.25):
So the Shrimp and Cold Noodle Salad made us really mad because it went from one of the best items at the festival, to just good and nothing more. The previous version was a shrimp and scallop cake that was perfection, this version while one of the more refreshing foods, is a downgrade.
The 3 shrimp they give you are the best part of the dish and are seasoned well. They are served cold though over cold noodles but we just weren’t fans of the way they are served. Last year they had a wonderful lemony, zesty taste to them, this year they had some kind of a sauce on them that was very bitter and leaves a horrible taste in your mouth.
This makes the list of our Worst Snacks at Food and Wine and you can definitely skip this without losing any sleep!
Red Hot Spicy Thai Curry Beef with Steamed Rice ($5.50):
The best item from the Thailand last year is back and we were very happy about that! If you like spicy food then this has to be on your list of must-try snacks at Food and Wine. All of us love spicy food and we felt the heat, so just be prepared if you have problems with the heat.
The beef is very soft and tender and mixed into the curry sauce, and then poured on top of a bed of white rice. It’s all about the sauce really and that’s what makes this dish. Not really the best thing to eat when the sun is blazing out but delicious all the same.
A little disappointed in the portion size as there was very little beef, but hopefully the person serving today was just a little light with the spoon and they give you more next time.
Maison Willm Réserve Gewürztraminer ($6.00)
Why there is a French wine at the Thailand marketplace I have no idea, but I have to say I liked it. The Maison Willm Réserve is similar to a Riesling, super yummy and sweet. I don’t necessarily think it goes with the spicy Thai dishes, but it was quite tasty.
Booth Summary and Grade:
Thailand was disappointing this year, and almost not worth going to imo. The Thai Curry Beef was really good and the best thing on the menu, though it was disappointing to see the portion was less than before. The Shrimp and Cold Noodle Salad was not even palatable and the Chicken with Peanut Sauce wasn’t good either.
I’d just stop for the Spicy Beef if you are a huge fan of spicy food, and then be on my way.
