Disneyland Monorail Returning October 15

Any Disney park-goer will tell you one of the most magical experiences of any visit is riding the iconic monorail. Now, starting Friday, October 15, 2021, the monorail is returning to Disneyland and welcoming guests once again!

Disneyland Monorail returns

The Disneyland monorail was closed for about 1 1/12 years when Disneyland temporarily was shut down and hasn’t been open so far during the Disneyland reopening. It hadn’t come back online until now and guests will no doubt be chomping at the bit to ride once more!

The “Highway in the Sky” as it is more affectionately known, has been a beloved Disneyland attraction for more than 60 years. In fact, it was recently featured on an episode of the Disney+ series “Behind the Attraction.”

If you haven’t seen it yet, we highly recommend you watch it as there is so much good footage of the classic monorail and even when then-Vice President Richard Nixon came to see it open. It was really groundbreaking as at that time, it was the first daily operating monorail in the Western Hemisphere.

The monorail is really an attraction all on its own, exactly the way Walt Disney originally wanted it. I know we never make a trip to Disneyland without riding it as it has some of the best views of the parks. You can get a great overhead look at Tomorrowland and Fantasyland at Disneyland Park, as well as Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure park.

There are two locations to board the Disneyland Monorail; one station is located in the Downtown Disney District and the other station is in Tomorrowland.

If you are staying at one of the Disneyland hotels, a cool trick is to hop on the monorail at the Downtown Disney District, and then take it directly into Disneyland Park, bypassing the ticket lines. To do this you will need to bring your valid park admission which will be checked before entering.

As with all indoor locations and transportation systems at Disneyland, a face mask is required on the monorail. This is the same in Walt Disney World.
