While construction for the new “Star Wars” land in Disneyland continues on, this week we learned that some classic attractions that have been shut down due to the construction will be coming back in 2017. Among those are the Disneyland Railroad and Rivers of America, which are both part of Walt’s original lineup of attractions. Also coming back in Summer 2017 are:
- Fantasmic!
- Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia
- Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer’s Island
- Davey Crockett Explorer Canoes
The Rivers of America are a classic monument in Disneyland and an icon in the 60 year history of the park, and it’s once again going through a make-over, but it will make the area of the park a “can’t miss stop” once again. Not only is “Fantasmic!” coming back to light up the river bank, but the iconic Disneyland Railroad will now be passing by on an elevated trestle alongside and over the river. You can see it on the top left of the picture. Disneyland just hasn’t been the same without the Railroad, it’s so important to the park, so hearing that it’s opening soon is a relief.
This is also great new as some guests have been complaining about the Star Wars land construction and the closing of these classics, it looks like they will be even better next summer! I’m especially looking forward to taking the explorer canoes out for a spin!
The waterway was such an important part of Walt’s vision for the park, and he would be so happy to see that it will continue to be a park icon for decades to come!
There isn’t an exact date for when they are opening, but I would think like the new Guardians of the Galaxy attraction that’s taking over the Tower of Terror, before D23 next July would be a great time seeing how important that event will be. Stay tuned for more updates.

My name is Ziggy and I love Disney, everything Disney! I grew up on Disney and it has and continues to be a huge part of my life. I started young when my parents took me to Disney World when I was 18 months old. Little did they know that would be the first of an uncountable number of trips we would take. I have so many amazing memories going to Disney with my family and friends and it has been interwoven into my DNA.
