REVIEW: Belgium 2017 Epcot Food and Wine Festival

The Belgium booth is always an epcot Food and Wine favorite of mine, that’s because I LOVE Waffles!!  I mean we all know they are far superior to pancakes, and so when you want a waffle in Epcot, this is the place!  The Belgian Waffle with berry compote is one of my favorite all-time desserts at Food and Wine and I get it every time!  Is it still as good as last year?  We’ll find out what it’s like in my Belgium Review: 2017 Epcot Food and Wine Festival….

Belgium Booth:

Belgium is exactly where we left it last year, right between Brazil and Morocco.  Certainly one of the most colorful booths at Food and Wine:

Belgium Menu:

The menu hasn’t really changed since last year, with only a chilled coffee being added and a beer flight.  Kind of disappointing they didn’t at least add one more food option seeing as they only have one savory and 2 sweet, was my complaint from last year too.  At least prices only went up 0.25 cents…

 Menu Review:

First on the menu is the Beer-braised Beef served with Smoked Gouda Mashed Potatoes.  This is a really good dish.  The meat is very tender and if you are a beer drinker you’ll like the taste of beer prominent in the sauce.  I love the gouda mashed potatoes, much more so than the ones in the Boeuf Bourguignon in France.  Anytime you put cheese and potatoes together it’s hard to screw up!  Like last year however I didn’t think there was that much meat inside, should have been more.  Sorry they haven’t corrected this.  That said it’s still a good dish and worth trying.

For our next entree we tried, oh wait, there was only one entree.  The Belgians apparently don’t even mess around with main courses, just beer and then straight to dessert! hahahaha.  Ok then.

Good thing this next dessert is one of my absolute favorites and a staple of mine, Belgian Waffle with Berry Compote and Whipped Cream.  I’m a sucker for berries and love this stuff so much!  Could probably eat it by the spoonful if they’d let me, should actually ask about that next time!  It’s not overly sweet, but has just a little tang to it too, which making eating it by the spoonful probably more doable now that I think of it.  Whipped cream is just standard from a can.  That’s one thing they can improve on for next time, some nice FRESH whipped cream would be unreal.  My waffle was a little spongy this year, I think it had been sitting for a bit in the berries which absorbed into it, so would have liked it just a bit more firm, but still delicious as usual.

Lastly we tried the Belgian Waffle with Warm Chocolate Ganache and Whipped Cream.  I mean I get the whole waffle theme thing, but really these guys don’t have much of a fantasy do they?  This one I like less than the berries for the same reason as last year, the chocolate just isn’t very good.  Tastes like a syrup from a bottle, and it’s too watery and not rich enough.  I would really like to see something else in it’s place next year because I’m done with this one for now.

I didn’t have a drink this time, but the Leffe Blonde Belgian Pale Ale is always a great option.  Golden and not too heavy, just right for Food and Wine imo.

Booth Summary and Grade:

Overall the Belgium booth was just ok.  I mean I still love my Waffle with Berries, and the Beer-braised Beef is too, but the waffle with chocolate isn’t good cause the main ingredient isn’t very good.  They just always keep this menu the same and it needs some fresh air imo.  Hopefully next year we’ll see some fresh ideas…
