This is a Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster Construction Update. This is one of the most anticipated, yet controversial attractions being built in Walt Disney World right now because of sightline problems it’s causing for some. In this Guardians of the Galaxy coaster update for July 2018, we’re going to look at the latest progress of the attraction and also its impact on the views around Epcot.
If you missed it, check out our latest update when we looked at the tiles being stripped off the outside of the old Universe of Energy pavilion building which will serve as the queue for this new attraction.
Let’s see what’s new…
We took these shots from the Monorail and you can see the Guardians of the Galaxy coaster show building just towering over the cars in the Epcot parking lot…
There are three, yes three cranes working on the job as we speak as another wall is being built on the backside:
This view is still from the monorail and you can see the building behind Mouse Gear with the Universe of Energy building in front:
With Spaceship Earth standing a cool 180 feet tall, the Guardians building isn’t much behind and is expected to be from 120-130 feet when finished:
Close-up of the steelwork on the frame of the building:
Ok, so we know that from up in the monorail and parking lot the Guardians of the Galaxy coaster building is going to be visible, but what about from actually down in the park? Let’s go through the front entrance and see:
We’re down in front of Spaceship Earth by the fountain in the entrance plaza of Epcot. If you look over to your left, there she is:
We don’t know what changes are coming to the entrance plaza but in any case it looks like it will be visible from there:
Let’s head over towards the Universe of Energy and Wonders of Life pavilions and see:
from out in front:
So we can see it for sure in front of where the actual attraction will start, what about over by the Wonders of Life?
Pretty clear there too.
We go over one pavilion to Mission Space:
It’s not quite as noticeable here but it still is.
Let’s head over towards World Showcase, and we’ll swing by the Odyssey building and check from there:
It’s definitely noticeable and for sure the further away from it you walk, the more noticeable it becomes:
We’ve fully cleared Future World and are now in World Showcase. Besides the shots we saw from out in front of Epcot, here starts to become the most noticeable:
It’s blocked in Mexico because the pyramid is too tall, but China is another story:
Now we’re over by Italy and you can see it in the background against the Test Track building. It’s significantly taller than Test Track and is now starting to really be too much imo:
What else can you say besides it’s giant?
Now the big test, across the lagoon let’s see how it compares to Spaceship Earth:
Of course Spaceship Earth is still significantly taller, but it is almost to the point where it could be distracting, taking away the attention from Spaceship Earth.
Now that we’ve established that the Guardians coaster will be visible from all over Epcot, some interesting rumors from the web also might give us a clue as to what the building will look like when finished.
According to Marni1971 on the WDWMagic forums, Disney is looking into a Xandarian design for the coaster show building. Xandar was a planet in the original Guardians of the Galaxy film, and seeing the Nova Core has already been represented in the concept art from D23. Expo, it’s also quite possible the building could have an overlay similar to the architecture you see the Nova Core use.
Here’s an example of what the building could look like:
Some will argue that this would make things even worse, but Disney surely can’t leave it as a plain concrete exterior (thought that didn’t stop them with Test Track) and something like the concept above would be pretty futuristic and fit into the theme of Future World to a certain degree.
The Guardians of the Galaxy coaster is expected to open in 2020 but stay tuned for more updates as we have them…

My name is Ziggy and I love Disney, everything Disney! I grew up on Disney and it has and continues to be a huge part of my life. I started young when my parents took me to Disney World when I was 18 months old. Little did they know that would be the first of an uncountable number of trips we would take. I have so many amazing memories going to Disney with my family and friends and it has been interwoven into my DNA.

Gotta take the bad (the building's sight line) with the good (the overhaul of a badly outdated Universe of Energy and the need for another E-Ticket attraction for Epcot. I suspect that when they build the Epcot hotel this will also impact the landscape of the park as well. I personally do not have a problem with the building being viewable from different parts of the park. Epcot is different from the Magic Kingdom and I don't feel this is "bad show" if different attractions can be seen from other areas within the park. It's for the greater good.
