Patagonia Review: 2016 Epcot Food and Wine Festival

Patagonia is always a stand-out for me at Food and Wine and I think also over-looked a bit (people usually pass by to the more high-profile, nearby Canada and Hawaii) but it really is one of the best booths year in and year out, and always consistent.  Let’s see if this year it keeps up it’s high standard…

Menu review:

I love the Patagonia, I think it’s one of the strongest menus at Food and Wine this year, especially for the savory items.  Let’s start with the Beef Empanada.  Essentially it hasn’t changed much from last year.  It has a nice crunchy shell and the beef inside has a nice flavor.  I like it but I feel like there isn’t enough beef inside.  Maybe next year whoever is stuffing these babies will be a bit more generous.

The Grilled Beef Skewer with Chimichurri Sauce and Boniato Purée is one of my favorite Food and Wine items of ALL-TIME!!  I absolutely LOVE this thing.  I have to get it every year!!

Food and Wine 2016, Patagonia - Grilled Beef SkewerThe meat is very flavorful, and it’s helped even more by that freaking awesome Chimichurri Sauce on top!!  It’s sitting on a bed of the most silky smooth mashed potatoes you’ve ever tried, all that drenched in a pool of butter…

My Cardiologist won’t be very happy with me, but this is one of those times where you just don’t really care! 😉  Get this thing now…in fact, get two!

Lastly there’s a Roasted Verlasso® Salmon with Quinoa Salad and Arugula Chimichurri.  Normally I would say to mix it up and use some other sauce instead of the Chimichurri again here, but it’s so stinking good that I honestly don’t care where they put it.  They can put it on a dessert next year if they want to and it’s fine with me!  Salmon is pleasantly good, very moist, fresh and a decent size piece.  If you want fish this a a great option.

Booth Summary and Grade:

Overall Patagonia gets the win!  The Beef Empanada could use more beef, but the Salmon is one of the better seafood options at Food and Wine, and I would sell my right kidney, maybe both, for the Grilled Beef Skewer.  Make this a must on your visit to Food and Wine.

If you have to get just one thing:  Grilled Beef Skewer

Grade:  8.5

[…] Not really my first choice of a food to eat in Florida with the heat index at 97 degrees.  Again I’m not a huge lamb guy so this wasn’t my favorite dish as it did have a very distinct “gamey” taste.  I tried to be partial however.  In my opinion there should have been a bit more lamb as there were only 3 or 4 very small chunks.  The veggies were nice, but the mashed potatoes weren’t very good imo.  Of all the mashed I tasted at Food and Wine they were the worst.  Check out the ones that come with the Beef Skewer in Patagonia and you will be blown away!
