It looks like construction will be underway soon for a new Illuminations: Reflections of Earth fireworks show replacement. According to the Orlando Sentinel Disney is going to be working on $2 million worth of electrical upgrades to Epcot’s World Showcase Lagoon and The Reedy Creek Improvement District has approved the plans.
We’ve been following a possible Illuminations replacement show for quite some time and the possibility really took off last year at the D23 Expo when Disney revealed new artwork for the Epcot expansion. In that concept art you can clearly see what appears to be a new nighttime spectacular over World Showcase Lagoon which also has fountains as part of the show.
According to the reports Disney will be installing a pipe from the south side of the lagoon onto one of the islands, which no doubt will supply some of the special effects for the new show. $1.8 million is going to be spent on “electrical upgrades” at the lagoon, $325,000 for materials, and an additional $220,000 for engineering and construction inspection and survey work.
While Illuminations: Reflections of Earth is the longest running nighttime spectacular in Walt Disney World, (it opened in 1999) and is one of my all-time favorites, it has had its run and really needs to retire. If you watch Happily Ever After and then Illuminations after, the difference is startling.
This is only one of many new Nighttime Spectaculars coming to the Disney Parks. Just yesterday we reported about a new World of Color “Villainous” show, and also Tokyo Disneyland is also planning a show for their 35th anniversary.
Disney hasn’t officially commented on these upgrades coming to World Showcase yet so stay tuned for official announcements soon.
